Production Log Week 5

In this week we were told the ask that we had to do which involves making our own music group in groups of either 2 or 3 people. My partner for his task is Myles Glaven, we went on MP3 unsigned and we wee told to find a song from an wrist and decide which one we was going to sue with my partner and I. We also, had to do a powerpoint pitch in front of the class and then get feedback on the focus group for improvements and chances that i could make to my music video. The song i chose was 'Ketchup killer' and was done by James Oakwood, i sent him an email hoping he would reply an give me his permission but so far i haven't heard anything back from him but hope i will soon.

Beachcombing

This blog post will feature me analysing 5 different types of music videos which act one i focus on one different then. These involve; Audience, costume, narrative, Lighting, editing and camerawork.

Narrative

This music video's narrative consist of showing each oof the group members lifestyles and how very different they are to one another. Which then leads to them being together at the same time all so similar. This attracts the audience because as the target audience i'd say would be within 16-25 year olds they can relate to the fact that how there friends came from different backgrounds int he past but are now very similar people. At the start of the music video you can already state that the narrative would be reflecting from the past because they show an audience of young people looking at clips front he past. This can relate to the target audience of 16-25 and engage them with the music video because it can inform them certain aspects of what life a couple of years ago was like. Furthermore, i find that the song 'On top of the world' by Imagine dragons produces an effective narrative on their audience because you don't know what toe expect next which is a main reason why i and the target audience would probably continue to watch.

Costume

The title of this song is called 'Lazy Song' and is performed by an artist named Bruno Mars. This is a prime exam,e of when costume is use din a music video which would engage and audience of 13-19 year olds. Firstly, the clothing is mainly a monkey mask this would immediately appeal to the target audience because it's something you wouldn't expect from a slow suspenseful type of song so it already produces something different to that type of genre music. In addition, another aspect with the clothing from the music video is the fact that they wear sunglasses with the monkey mask on. This can suggest coolness because nowadays the 13-9 year olds wear sunglasses as a sense of fashion so this could also appeal to the target audience of teenagers as well as laziness. I think this music video uses costume to a good effect because i can't find any other music videos with this type of genre for music that uses monkey mask in their performance which is why i like this music video a lot.

Camerawork

From this music video called animals which is performed by Martin Garrix i can identify a lot of camera language which is sued to appeal to the target audience of 17-25 year olds. Some of these camera shots include close ups and long shots to show the actions the performers are doing and long shots to show how they interact with one another. As they use a close up when they pour gasoline on the car and set fire to it this shows a sign of being a rebel and having fun which can relate to the usual teenage and young adult life. Furthermore, another use of close ups and long shots of people dancing it creates the effect that it would make the audience feel that they are apart of the dancing and they do this by using a variety of  camera shots to show a lot of people dancing so it makes the audience feel involved. This would be a good effect on an audience in any music video because it would keep them engaged and listening to the song which could increase the popularity of the song as a whole.

Editing

This music video is called don't you worry child and is performed by sweedish house mafia. This is a fast paced song and from this I identified some editing techniques that this music video uses well. The first being a variety of jump cuts when the beat drops, this is done so they can give that hype effect that the dancers in the music video are having so the audience isn't missing out on the action. The target audience for this music video i think would be 16-25 year olds this is because i fin that this is the age where people go to parties and go to raves and i think that by having this song relate to their target audience of 16-25 year olds it would produce a more effective song than say it was targeted at 26-31 year olds.

Lighting

This is a music video by Jessie J with the title of the song being 'Who you are'. Throughout this music video you see a blue dim lighting a lll throughout the song. From this i can tell that this song is about coldness and sadness because these are two similarities which features in the colour of dark light blue. The target audience for this music video i say would be teenage girls between 13 and 17 year olds. This is because as this song is mainly stress related then a similarity could be seen as not only the artist Jessie J is stressed but her target audience is swell due to school and life related issues. So this song could be effective in a good way to her target audience because it could make them feel better about themselves.

3 Digi Paks Analysis

This is my first example of a digipak that i will be analysing. The artist of this digipak is Michael Jackson. They are being branded as a lively and energetic person as they show images of certain areas of his dance which he performs in one of his songs that are featured on the album. Also, through the use of bright colours I know that Michael Jackson is being branded as a happy and joyful CD because these colours are used to make the target audience engaged and excited with his latest album through his digipak. The digipak is constructed into six sections. The first being a image of Michael Jackson with his arms in the air just below the title of the album 'This is it'. The second being images of live performances he has done to show that he has a good reputation with a lot of people from different areas around the world. The third, fourth and fifth sections of the digipaks involves the CD's available which feature all of his songs and they place the CD behind image of the title 'This is it' and some other images to keep the digipak that much exciting for their target audience. The sixth and final section of this digipak is the blur  this is where he gives some information about himself, the songs and his lifestyle to attract his audience to buy his CD even more than before. The message that this digipak gives to the audience from my view is that to always believe in yourself because success won't come to you, you have to earn it ad i think this is his message due to him showing images of his live performances with packed crowds which is every artists target because this states whether an artist is successful or not.

Now moving on to my second example of a digipak that i will be analysing comes form a band named 'Ali revoir Simone'. They are branded in a peaceful and kind form through using images of flowers, leaves and a light blue background. The colour blue connotes calm and peacefulness which immediately told me that their theme is a relaxing and peaceful type of music that is provided. As my previous digipak that i analysed this one too has six sections. The first three sections of this digipak features the name of the band with a tree as the main image which relates to nature which could also be another theme of this music album/digipak. The other two of the first three sections of the digipak features the song list and a little message to the audience which could engage them even  more to buy this video because it shows this band are aware of their fan base and does good things for them on their album. I think that they have done this because they want their audience to feel relaxed and joyful about the album and they don't want to cause any hype or excitement because that is what this band is all about relaxation and peacefulness.

The third and final digipak that i will be analysing is the Katy Perry digipak which is showing off her new album. Immediately i can tell that the artist Katy Perry is being branded in a sexual way to attract the male audience. This is done by showing 3 images of her on 3 separate sections of the digipak posing sexually to try and gain the male audience as her usual primary target audience is women of all ages.. The digipak is constructed in another identical way as the other digipak i analysed with six sections each one either featuring images of candy and cakes or pink clouds. This already informs me that the theme of her album is sweetness because she uses a lot of images of candy even on the disc that comes within the digipak which is what you would usually expect from a Katy Perry album  the young theme. The message in my opinion, form this digipak is to have a good time with her music and be excited and hyper with the music as sweets usually make the young female and some men audience hyper so that could suggest that her message is for her audience to have a good time and enjoy her music. An example of movies i found where they show a girl that was ugly and un popular but later turned out to be pretty and popular are films such as mean girls and she's all that. These are just two of many examples which show similarities with Katy Perry's music video when representing a un popular girl dating a popular guy.

Production Log Week 4

In this week of media studies we were taught music video conventions and had to analyse examples of digi paks and music videos it self to gain an understanding of the terminology. As you can see on my blog i have done 3 analysis on music digi paks and magazine articles to show how a variety of artists represents their character and their music. We also learnt features on a music magazine advert and looked at things such as body copy, main image, focal point and others to understand how and why they are used for multiple artists.
